A Father’s Request

This could be my last request to my children.

Child, when my I eyes failed me
And I intentionally broke a glass or plate
Don’t get mad and be angry with me
Your forgiveness, my joy if I can have.

Please don’t be annoyed and shout at me
When I can’t audibly hear what you say
Have patience my child, age is finally coping up with me
Just kindly repeat the whole phrase, if you may.

If one morning, I have difficulty getting up
Do offer your hand and help me out
Just when I offer mine when you’re starting up
To make your first few steps that made me proud.

Child, don’t laughed or be annoyed listening to my weird remarks
Even though, I sounded like a broken record at times
Remember those balloons you saw at the park
You never stop crying until I bought one for a dime.

Don’t get irritated by my unpleasant smell
I’m prone to colds, so I’m lazy taking a shower
But have you forgotten your grandma’s diaper tale
That you really stink, every time I change your diaper.

How I wish we share light moments again
Light talks and laughter I still endear
Remember the teddy bear’s story, you’ve told me again and again
I’ve never get tired listening, though your words are choppy and unclear.

And if my time to go has come
Please be at my bedside for a while
Hold my hands for the last time
So I can face death with a smile.

But don’t you worry my darling
When its my day to face my Lord, you know what?
I’ll ask Him to guide your life and give you much blessings
Because you’ve been a good child, to your Mom and Dad.

  8. Future sentiments of an old father who can hardly see, hear, touch, taste but can still feel the warmth of a son's care, love and attention. This is the only sense that will be left strong enough not to be ignored.

  9. I find it a bit sad that almost all "last words" poems or stories I read have parents asking for forgiveness from their children - when it should be the other way around, in my opinion.

  11. Well written, my same sentiments when I reach my twilight years...

I could only hope that the child I lovingly raised will care for me and her dad the same way we did when she was young.

  14. I don't want those things to happen to me when I'm old and weak..and in our family, we take care of our elderly the best we can and hope that the next generation will take care of us too once we got into that stage.

  16. that is the undying love of a father . to grant his request on his aged life is not a mere reciprocation of what he did before but a sign of being responsible and a good child he guided all his life. I almost tear up here ...
